𝙃𝙖𝙡𝙛-𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙣 is a site-specific installation that transforms Puzzle Gallery into a space reminiscent of a domestic shed, where objects—car parts, light fittings, tools, granite, Perspex, and timber—are arranged on makeshift shelves.
Through light and careful placement, these objects take on new significance, shifting between moments of volume and quiet focus. Borrowing its title from a poem by Tomas Tranströmer, the work explores the mystery in everyday life and the blurred space between memory and material.
The debut solo presentation of Akil Ahamat’s practice, Extinguishing Hope draws from big and small screen cinematic languages to produce a non-narrative atmosphere described as ‘slow cinema for short attention spans.’
The exhibition, curated by Sebastian Henry-Jones, features a multi-screen and immersive installation that explores the aesthetics and psychosocial affects of ever-unfolding disaster.
Built in a gaming engine, Extinguishing Hope uses darkness as a motif to represent our age of hyper-rationality, producing an excess of truth that is impossible to make sense of. A key text for the exhibition is the canonical Javanese poem Kidung Rumeksa Ing Wengi (Song guarding in the night), attributed to Sunan Kalijaga, one of the nine saints of Javanese Islam. This prayer describes threats both earthly and spiritual and has journeyed from Java to Sri Lanka along with the exile of Malay peoples—Ahamat’s extended diasporic community—as an incantation for protection against the dangers of life in exile.
Inspired by research in the Chau Chak Wing Museum archives and collections, Katerina Teaiwa presents new work exploring Banaban dance as a form of protest.
Mungari
Dance Protest: Project Banaba is the latest in an exhibition series by artist Katerina Teaiwa and curator Yuki Kihara, exploring the history of Banaba, an island in the central Pacific.
In the 20th century, the British Phosphate Commissioners, a partnership between the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, mined 22 million tons of phosphate from the island. In 1945, Banabans endured forced relocation to Rabi Island, Fiji.
Expressing their identity and resistance to this colonial project, Banabans revitalised their song and dance repertoires. In the 1970s, when they sued the British government and company for the decimation of their island, dancers led the protest marches that accompanied the legal proceedings.

Mungari
Mungari, a fishing songline in Dharawal culture, celebrates the long-awaited homecoming of four of the most significant fishing spears in Australian history. Crafted by Gweagal clansmen of Gamay (Botany Bay), stolen by James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour in April 1770, and held in the United Kingdom for 254 years, these spears tell a story of resistance then and now: the story of the Gweagal Ancestors who bravely defended their homeland, and the story of their descendants who fought for many years to have them returned.

This photographic exhibition introduces Dupain’s modernist approach to photography in a brilliant and frequently hilarious series of candid shots.
Max Dupain
The Australian modernist photographer Max Dupain (1911-1992) documented student life at the University in the early 1950s in a brilliant and frequently hilarious series of candid shots. They show the range of student cultures and interests in the immediate postwar years. The exhibition introduces Dupain’s modernist approach to photography which combines formal architectural backdrops with candid documentary studies of student life. One series displays the student floats on which they performed and demonstrated major issues of the day. The Petrov affair inspired one of the floats in 1954, another includes anti-bomb demonstrations.
