Located in the heart of Sydney’s Chippendale, Kensington Street is a must-visit lifestyle precinct that combines heritage, hospitality, retail and art in a way that Sydney has never seen before.

Since opening in September 2015, Kensington Street has become a bold new home for restaurants, cafes, markets, artists, galleries, innovative retailers, and creatives – in Sydney’s new downtown. Visitors can explore tiny historic, fine-grained workers cottages and lofty industrial warehouses, combined with sparkling new structures, rooftop areas and a series of communal dining courtyards.

OLIO KeNSINGTON STReeT

Sicilian-born, award-winning chef Lino Sauro opened Olio Kensington Street in early 2017 to show Sydney the best of Modern Italian cuisine. Olio Kensington Street (Italian for olive oil) is located in the beautifully restored The Old Rum Store with a contemporary indoor dining room plus lush rooftop terrace overlooking Chippendale.

For the past 10 years, Sauro has lived in Singapore heading up his first solo Sicilian restaurant venture showing locals that Italian food can be more than pizza and heavy, creamy sauces. Now it’s Sydney’s turn.

“This is the style of food my family and I eat in Sicily. At home we’re surrounded by the ocean and olive trees, so obviously olive oil and seafood are very important. Sicily’s historic past also mean there’s influences from North Africa and Mediterranean Europe. It’s a beautiful cuisine that I believe will translate really well to Australia given the location and climate here.”– Lino Sauro, Chef

Gavroche Chippendale brings not only classic French cuisine to Sydney, but also accoutrement from the culinary epicentre of the country – like the imposing oakwood entrance from Lyon’s venerable Brasserie Georges, brass-railed banquette seating, oversized carved wooden bar, hand-painted tiled walls, four-metre antique French silk weaver’s table, and 1950 Parisian VeloSoleX motorised bicycle.

The menu pays homage to Parisian bistros. With an array of classic dishes that capture the Parisian spirit, and a wine list with a mix of hand-selected French and Australian wines, you’ve got the buzz of Paris in the heart of Sydney!

Something for Jess believes a cafe has a rare opportunity to bring like minded people together and create change in the local community if they want. Hence, they’re trying to ‘be’ the change that they want to see in the world.

They change their menu monthly and source all produce locally when possible with a focus on quality and seasonality – all whilst providing a delicious coffee, yummy food & big laughs from a humble kitchen.

Something for Jess takes pride in the Chippendale community by donating to charity and encouraging emerging artists to share their creativity.

GIN LaNe

Playfully referencing the iconic Gin Lane print by English artist William Hogarth, Gin Lane is one of Sydney’s most unique small bars. Located in the vibrant lifestyle precinct of Kensington Street in Chippendale, Gin Lane offers an intimate space to eat, drink and enjoy great company.

Gin Lane’s plan is to make a convert of anyone who says they don’t like gin.

HOLY DUCK!

Located smack-bang between Central and Broadway, you’ll find Holy Duck! on Sydney’s favourite foodie laneway, Kensington Street. This is modern-Chinese cuisine at its ducking best. You’ll be saying “duck me!” when you taste how they transform traditional dishes into exciting new favourites.

With a diverse menu of casual eats and next-level Chinese BBQ, Holy Duck! is a nod to the joys of Chinese street food. Watch as the chefs expertly prepare crispy, succulent ducks from the huge, traditional hanging gallery. They’re delicious!

Not in the mood to duck? No worries. There’s plenty of other meat and vegetarian options. Love hot and spicy? Just ask your friendly waiter for more chilli; that’ll really set off some firecrackers.

This cafe and bakery is a favourite among locals seeking top-quality bread and fantastic pastries.

Don’t expect to waltz in and grab a table straight away. The space is just 35 square metres. Once you do nab a table, take note of the crisp, calming interiors, with hanging plants, tiled walls and plenty of natural light streaming through the large windows.

The blackboard menu is short, with a few options that rotate regularly. One item that hasn’t shifted is the bacon sandwich. It features manchego, pickles, lemon aioli and Simon’s favourite streaky bacon on a seeded ciabatta. For those with a sweet tooth, the fig and walnut toast with fresh ricotta, stone fruit and caraway will hit the spot. Beer and wine are available if you’re in the mood. If you see a slice of quiche, go for it. Brickfield’s version takes ham, spinach, rosemary and goat’s cheese and wraps it all up in shatteringly flaky pastry.

Don’t leave without a loaf of the famous sourdough. The team works with a pre-industrial variety of whole wheat that uses the bran, endosperm and wheat germ to create a silkier dough and heavier loaf. Because the entire grain is involved, the bread’s shelf life is limited, but it’s sure to be devoured well before its use-by.
